Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust (RDaSHfirst implemented the STORM® Skills Training package in 2010.  Following on from its success they reinvested in STORM® in 2016, up-skilling a new group of facilitators to continue the roll out of Suicide Prevention and Self-Harm Mitigation training across the organisation.  

 

STORM® training enhances the professional skills and development of the health trust’s staff. 

 

I spoke to a few of the RDaSH STORM® facilitators, 12 months after their training, to learn about their training experiences within the organisation 

 

Paul Pitts, a Registered Mental Health Nurse at RDaSH, has been delivering STORM® for the past 12 months.  During this time, Paul has been pleasantly surprised by the range of people STORM® is relevant to, “anywhere from admin staff working in mental health that take the occasional call from distressed patients to people who have been working in frontline mental health for the past 20-30 years and everyone in between have found the training interesting and helpful with their practice,” he says.  

 

For those with a higher level of experience,” Paul explains “the training provides a space to reflect and provides reassurance. They pass on their experience to the group, which is very valuable... For those who are newly qualified the training provides a space to ask questions, they share their different way of looking at things with the groupwhich brings the benefit of fresh eyes to those with more experience”.  

 

Paul speaks passionately about the benefits of the training but also acknowledges that the filmed role plays can be anxiety provoking for participants.  “Some people really dread the filmed role plays” he says but this tends to be short lived.  They (the participants) realise it’s not a massive piece of time, they really get into it and they get something out of it”.  STORM® Skills Training uses filmed role plays to reinforce skills development.   The technique is evidenced as an effective learning tool when developing and enhancing skills, this is key component of STORM® and contributes to the proven effectiveness of our training packages.  

 

Joanna Odams, Community Mental Health Nurse and STORM® Facilitator, finds the STORM material empowering for patients and staff to work through in a crisis situation. Most importantly I feel the training provides a toolkit for us to competently apply our knowledge and skills to a variety of crisis situations in a timely manner. 

 

Richard Tucker has been a STORM® facilitator since 2010 and delivered the facilitator training at RDaSH as a STORM® Consultant.  Richard himself has a keen interest in suicide prevention and is doing study to further extend his expertise.  For Richard, the most important benefit of the training is its ability to provide people with the additional confidence to ask difficult questions. “This (ability) is important” he explains “because if questions are not asked (questions about thoughts of suicide) with confidence they can be interpreted as “I’d really rather you said no.”  

 

The RDaSH STORM team have now trained 173 people across RDASH, including people in mental health, drug and alcohol services and learning disability services.  The team will continue the roll out of STORM training across the trust.
