For World Suicide Prevention Day 2019, the STORM® Team held events that brought the members of the Manchester community together to raise awareness about Suicide Prevention. We partnered with old friends Waterside Gym and new friends St James & Emmanuel Church and volunteers from the Lizzie Lowe Legacy.
Cycle around the globe challenge
STORM® and Waterside Gym, Didsbury joined forces again this year to host a Cycle Around the Globe event. The event was bigger and included more opportunities for members and friends of STORM® to join in and ultimately start conversations about suicide prevention. Helping STORM® on the day this year were representatives from the Lizzie Lowe Legacy.
There was a gym challenge that began on the 1st September until the 10th September. A month’s free membership was awarded the man and woman who achieved the most Km’s cycled within this period.
On the 4th September was the #HeyAreYouOK coffee morning and the start of the spin class challenge. All km’s cycled within each of the spin classes were calculated up until the end of the day on the 10th September.
And, on World Suicide Prevention Day itself we had the static bike challenge. As well as individual members and friends of STORM® giving their time to add to the km’s, we had Team Cycle-off’s. We also added the km’s cycled to and from the gym and any cycled within a personal workout. So that we included everyone, we had a separate challenge of km’s swam, ran, rowed, cross-trained.
The total km’s Team STORM-Waterside cycled totalled a staggering 8,821km – that’s enough to get us from Manchester to Mexico City!!
Also, one of Waterside’s Spin instructors, Bob Ashworth inspired members of spin classes he teaches in other local gyms to join in. Their combined total over a week was 2,914 km’s!
Lighting a candle in memory
This year, STORM® joined with St James & Emmanuel Church, Didsbury, to host a ‘Lighting a Candle in Memory’ event on the evening of 10th September. This non-religious event was to remember those lost to suicide and to show support for those bereaved or affected by suicide in the local area. We were joined by the Samaritans and the evening included a music performance. Following the lighting of candles – spelling out HOPE – many stayed for refreshments and to chat. The success of this event means that a Lighting a Candle Memory event each year at the church on World Suicide Prevention Day.
