As a remote team, we have become experienced at working in isolation. We meet up regularly for team meetings and also value the time we dedicate just to have a chat – or, as we like to call it, #BrewWithTheCrew time.

COVID-19 was a difficult time for us. We felt isolated for the first time as lockdown restrictions denied us the occasional face-to-face contact, and experienced anxiety at the uncertainty of a post lockdown world. As soon as we were able, we began to have regular #BrewWithTheCrew time again and immediately felt the benefits of feeling connected. We know that if we felt like this, it is highly likely that other teams would have felt this to some degree too – especially if they are not used to working remotely.

We decided that for World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) 2020 we would dedicate our #BrewWithTheCrew time to exploring our own emotional wellbeing in order to help ourselves and look out for each other better.

We then created a resource that we found helpful and would like to share with other teams. This resource will guide you and your team through a conversation about Emotional Wellbeing by following a series of questions.

 

About the #HEYAREYOUOK? Campaign

The aim of the #HeyAreYouOK? Campaign is to:

Promote a culture that teaches us to recognise (di)stress and to talk about it openly and honestly; a culture that teaches us to ask for help without fear of being stigmatised; and a culture that teaches us that sometimes we need to reach out to those we think may be finding life difficult to cope with.

The simple 3-step message challenges this culture by encouraging us to look after ourselves, look out for others, and if we feel able to, offer help and support if someone is struggling. By reaching out before life becomes difficult, or so unbearable that suicide becomes an option, we can make a difference.

Help us to spread the 3-step message and together “let’s shift the paradigm”. Help us to live in a world where suicide does not become an option; distress is met with compassion; and people feel able to ask for help – #HeyAreYouOK?
